A Unique Life | Nadide Hayat

We are proud to present this year our 10th Boston Turkish Film Festival Award for Excellence in Turkish Cinema to director ÇAĞAN IRMAK, in recognition of his contributions to Turkish cinema.

Çağan Irmak has been acknowledged as an accomplished storyteller and successor of “Yeşilçam" traditions, building a bridge between old and contemporary Turkish cinema with his films ranging from melodramas to films which include fantastic elements.

An Award Ceremony will take place on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 7:00 pm at Remis Auditorium of the Museum of Fine Arts, following the screening of his latest film,A Unique Life” (Nadide Hayat).  Q&A session with the director will take place after the film screening.

Cagan IrmakÇağan Irmak graduated from Aegean University, School of Press and Broadcasting from the Department of Radio-TV. He was awarded the Sedat Simavi Prize for his short films Fairy-Tale and Victim, which were shot during his time at the university. In 1992, he started working in the movie industry as an assistant director to various acclaimed directors. His short film Play Me Old and Wise, which he wrote and directed, was awarded the first runner up prize at IFSAK (Istanbul Photography and Cinema Association) in 1998.

After his extensive experience as assistant director, Irmak started to work as a director in television and quickly made a name for himself with his original style of storytelling and his technical expertise. He eventually became a household name with two projects; "Asmalı Konak" (2002), which was also shown on Greek television, and "Çemberimde Gül Oya" (2004), which was a project that he had written himself and had managed to shed light on a specific period of political history bringing a wide range of audiences together despite their generational gaps.

Irmak's first feature film "Wish Me Luck" (Bana Şans Dile) was produced in 2001. In 2003 his second feature film which he wrote and directed, "All About Mustafa" (Mustafa Hakkında Herşey), was highly acclaimed by film critics. In 2005 his third feature film, which he again had both written and directed, "My Father and Son" (Babam ve Oğlum) was awarded the Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Picture prizes by SIYAD (Turkish Film Critics' Association). After telling a fantastic story with "The Messenger" (Ulak) in 2007, the director made a great ticket box success in Turkey in 2008 with "Alone" (Issız Adam). Irmak's 2009 film "In Darkness" (Karanlıktakiler) was followed in 2011 by "My Grandfather's People" (Dedemin İnsanları), which was another box office success. In 2014, Irmak returned with "Are We OK?" (Tamam mıyız?). His 2015 film, "Whisper if I Forget" (Unutursam Fısılda), was a tribute to Turkish pop music of 1970s and 80s, bringing together two legendary actresses and musicians, Işıl Yücesoy and Hümeyra. Most of Irmak's works were screened at the Boston Turkish Film Festival in various years.
