BURCU KARADAĞ, ney

First female ney artist who performs professionally, Burcu Karadağ has performed in concerts with many orchestras and artists in France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Belgium, Austria, Egypt, Bosnia and Herzegovina, USA, Taiwan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, Oman, India.

Burcu Karadağ graduated from ITÜ Turkish Music State Conservatory, Department of Instrument Mastery, and completed her Master’s Degree in 2008 in Haliç University. She entered TRT Istanbul Radio in 1999 as a ney artist. She took part in various radio and TV programs and started working as an Instructor at Haliç University State Conservatory in 2004. Karadağ voiced Hezarfen Ney Concerto composed by Fazıl Say in Mannheim, Germany, which was a world premiere. Karadağ performed a solo concert in 2012 at World Flute Festival, New Delhi, India. She won Echo Classic Jury Special Award, one of the most prestigious musical recognitions in Europe, for her solo performance at Fazıl Say’s Istanbul Symphony work owing to her artistic bridging representation between the East and the West. Karadağ’s album, “Neyzen” (2012) is the first solo album by a female ney performer.

Burcu Karadağ’s book about ney training, “Teaching Ney with the Meshk Method”, was published in English and Turkish by Pan Publishers in 2013. She currently works as an Instructor at Haliç University State Conservatory, tutors ney classes, conducts various works of art with artists and bands and performs concerts with her own band Karadağ Ensemble in various parts of the world.

TAHİR AYDOĞDU, kanun

Tahir Aydoğdu received his first formal music training from his father Gültekin Aydoğdu, who is a kanun player at TRT Ankara Radio, and conductor of the Turkish Fasıl Ensemble. Later on, he continued to study music with distinguished musicians experts in Turkish music. Following his graduation from the Physics Department in the Middle East Technical University in Ankara in 1983, he was appointed to the TRT Ankara Radio Turkish Music Ensemble as a kanun player.

In addition to the concerts he gave in Turkey, Tahir Aydoğdu also performed in many significant musical venues in the U.S. and Asia, playing with renowned musicians and ensembles, including the "Modern Folk Trio" (Modern Folk Üçlüsü), with whom he worked for 8 years. He also played in many concerts with the jazz ensemble, "AsiaMinor", whose musical goal was to bring together Turkish Music and Jazz. In addition to his worldwide performances, Tahir Aydoğdu also has given presentations in numerous international workshops, seminars, and festivals about "kanun" in particular, and Turkish music in general.
